The case opens with Mai Taniyama, telling ghost stories with her friends. One of her friends tells the girls a story about the old school building. According to an urban legend, accidents and deaths occur whenever demolition is attempted. The girls are interrupted by Kazuya Shibuya, who implies that he is a fellow student.

The next day on the way to school, Mai passes by the old school building. When she sees an expensive-looking camera inside, she decides to investigate. Lin, seeing her, attempts to stop her from touching it. This startles Mai, who backs into a bookcase, which falls and injures Lin. Naru arrives, and tells Mai to go to school.

Later that day, Mai’s friends discuss their plans to tell ghost stories with Naru, when a classmate interrupts them. Kuroda claims to be psychic, and admonishes them for telling ghost stories, which raise the spirits and give her headaches. In the middle of this explanation, Naru arrives and challenges Kuroda’s statement about the old building, which she claims is severely haunted. Naru then asks to speak to Mai privately. He informs her that he is the president of SPR, that she injured his assistant, and that she must work as his assistant or pay for the camera—which is, in fact, as expensive as it looked.

Mai agrees to help Naru, and she accompanies him back to the old building, where she assists him in setting up the equipment. It is at this point that Mai decides to call Kazuya Shibuya “Naru-chan”, which is short for “narcissist.”
