Lin is selfless to his heritage, and says that he hates the Japanese for what they did to China. Mai argues back that it's not fair to hate someone because of who they were. She retorts, "I really wish you didn't hate me just because I'm Japanese." There was a momentary pause until Lin starts laughing and replies, "Im sorry. Someone said that to me a long time ago, you made me remember them." From their, they maintain a good relationship throughout the rest of the series.
